After viewing everybody's picks, the general consensus seems to be:
- Play to your strong pieces. Even a small clip that adds to your time limit but lowers the quality of your work is not worth it.
- A nice, well animated bumper can really tie your whole reel together. It makes a statement about who you are as an animator from the get-go and shows that you'll go the extra mile for presentation.
- A quick pace is the pace. Period.
- Any part of your reel that relies solely on sound for context is enough to make someone click away. It should work just as well silent as it does with sound.
- Projecting a cohesive style throughout looks both professional and personal to you as an animator. Show off your unique voice as best you can.
- Either focus on one medium (solely traditional, or 3d, etc.) or go for a wide variety of styles. Realize you may need both kinds depending on the job/internship you are applying for.
Job Research
Not to say I am the model student in how I posted about jobs, but just throwing out links with no context turns me off immediately.
I agree with Celia and the others that talked about Pixar being a good long term goal but not really a practical option. I also understand that some of the jobs posted were more about seeing where you need to be in the next couple of years as opposed to what jobs you could get right now. Additionally, I didn't really notice any jobs at a design firm using motion graphics, which I think would be applicable to many people in our department.
